Mass vs Weight Mistakes That Cost Marks

Mass and weight are not the same thing, but exam questions mix them on purpose. Each trap shows a wrong answer, the fix, and a calculator to check the number.

W = m g — Weight in newtons; mass in kilograms

Trap 1: Treating kilograms as newtons

Wrong: “A 5 kg bag has weight 5 N.”

Right: Mass is 5 kg. Weight is W = m g = 5 × 9.8 = 49 N (if g = 9.8).

Fix: Kilograms measure mass. Newtons measure force. Never paste kg into a force blank without multiplying by g.

Trap 2: Putting weight into the mass slot of F = ma

Wrong: F = 49 × 2 when mass is 5 kg and a = 2 m/s² (using 49 N as if it were mass).

Right: Use mass in kilograms: F = m a = 5 × 2 = 10 N.

Fix: If the problem gives weight in newtons and asks for acceleration, first find m = W/g, then use F = ma.

Trap 3: Mixing g = 9.8 and g = 10 in one solution

Wrong: Using g = 10 to get W, then g = 9.8 later in the same question without being told to.

Right: Pick the g your worksheet or exam states and keep it for every step.

Fix: Many papers say “take g = 10.” That is permission for that paper only.

Trap 4: Assuming normal force always equals weight

Wrong: On a 30° ramp, setting N = mg.

Right: On a standard incline with no other vertical push, N = mg cosθ, smaller than weight.

Fix: Flat floor, no other vertical forces → N = mg is fine. Ramps and elevators change N.

Trap 5: Using Earth g on the Moon

Wrong: Same 60 kg astronaut → W = 588 N on the Moon.

Right: Mass stays 60 kg. If g ≈ 1.6 m/s², W ≈ 96 N.

Fix: Mass is the amount of matter. Weight is how hard gravity pulls here.

Trap 6: Confusing weight with buoyancy checks

Wrong: Comparing density in kg/m³ directly to weight in newtons.

Right: Compare W = mg to Fb = ρVg, or compare object density to fluid density.

Fix: Same units on both sides of a float/sink comparison.

Trap 7: Calling a newton scale reading “mass”

Wrong: Reading 98 N and writing “mass = 98 kg.”

Right: If the scale reports newtons, that is weight. Mass = W/g = 98/9.8 = 10 kg.

Fix: Check the unit on the display or in the question before naming the quantity.
