What Kinetic Energy Means
Kinetic energy is the energy an object has because it is moving. In school mechanics, the usual formula is KE = ½ m v². Mass enters once; speed enters squared, so doubling the speed roughly quadruples the kinetic energy when mass stays fixed.

The Formula KE = ½mv²
For a single particle or rigid body treated as a point mass:
Rotational kinetic energy ½ I ω² belongs to a different model. Use the linear form unless the question clearly asks for spinning energy about an axis.
Units That Keep Marks Safe
SI defaults for most worksheets:
Example trap: a car at 72 km/h is 20 m/s, not 72 m/s. Leaving km/h in the formula inflates KE by more than an order of magnitude because of the square.
Worked Examples
Example 1: 2.0 kg at 3.0 m/s
KE = ½ (2.0)(3.0)² = ½ (2.0)(9.0) = 9.0 J. Rough check: ½ × 2 × 9 = 9.
Example 2: find speed from 50 J
A 4.0 kg object has KE = 50 J. v = √(2 × 50 / 4.0) = √(25) = 5.0 m/s. Check: ½ (4)(25) = 50 J.
Example 3: km/h conversion
A 0.50 kg ball moves at 36 km/h. First v = 36 / 3.6 = 10 m/s. KE = ½ (0.50)(10)² = 25 J. Skipping the conversion would wrongly use 36².
